What is Bridgital Loom?

Bridgital Loom is a solution created by TCS that blends cutting-edge technology with traditional craftsmanship. The goal is to revitalize India’s handloom industry by flipping its current design-weave-sell model where weavers produce sarees before any orders are placed into a smarter, demand-driven system.

The name itself tells the story. The initiative was born from the idea of “bridging the digital and the physical loom” a phrase that neatly captures how tradition and technology can move forward together instead of pulling in opposite directions.

The Problem It’s Solving

India’s handloom industry is one of the largest in the world, but it faces serious challenges. Weavers often spend weeks producing sarees with no guarantee of a sale. If the fabric doesn’t sell, the financial loss falls on the artisan not the retailer.

Pure silk, for instance, is expensive, and even a small mistake in a saree can lead to unsold inventory and that loss often falls on the weaver rather than the larger value chain.

There’s also a generational knowledge gap. Traditionally, weaving skills were passed down from a young age, with artisans spending more than a decade mastering intricate patterns. Today, many younger weavers enter the craft later in life, often after finishing school. That steep learning curve threatens the survival of the art form itself.

Bridgital Loom tackles these challenges on multiple fronts.

Smarter Design: Even experienced weavers typically limit themselves to around 15 colours in a saree because anything beyond that becomes difficult to track mentally. AI removes that limitation, enabling weavers to experiment with far more complex and creative patterns.

Faster Learning: Bridgital Loom aims to shorten the learning journey by acting as an assistive system not to replace expertise, but to help newcomers reach a high level of skill much faster. Think of it like having a master weaver sitting beside you, guiding every decision in real time.

Digitizing the Loom: The platform includes software to digitize traditional handlooms, automating processes previously managed by manual punch cards, enabling endless design possibilities, and drastically reducing the time it takes to set the loom for new motifs and patterns.

Made-to-Order Model: With the Bridgital Loom marketplace, weavers can create sarees when and as they are ordered, customers can design and order highly personalized sarees online from anywhere, and sellers can let customers use VR in their stores to design and order custom-made sarees.

Protecting What Makes Handloom Special

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Bridgital Loom is its philosophy. Rather than pushing toward mass production, the system is built to assist with intricate designs that cannot be replicated easily on automated power looms protecting what makes handloom fabrics special rather than standardising them into mass-produced patterns.

As Muthulakshmi Nellaiappan, Head of AI Strategy at Bridgital Loom, put it: the goal is not to change the craft but to reduce the time taken and improve the quality of the final product.

Bridgital Loom isn’t just making waves in India. It was recently featured at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with participation from over 100 countries and more than 500 industry experts. It was one of the flagship showcases in the Bharat Pavilion standing alongside AI innovations in infrastructure, agriculture, and education.
